Social Eyewitness

A one-touch app that helps keep you secure in public

The Challenge

Streamline notification speed

Cell phones have become an indispensable tool in cases of emergency but don’t always have the features needed to be able to quickly transmit real time events to multiple communication and social channels. For example, it can take multiple steps for a user to post a video on their networks with information that requires immediate action. The few tools that are on the market do not provide a cohesive solution that is effective and user friendly for multiple types of emergencies.

Discovery

What makes an accessible mobile security solution?

In my research, I found that there were many options for home security and a few options for mobile security, but very few solutions that covered both.

The related mobile solutions I found allow users to capture video and alert others that there’s an emergency. The most feature-rich solutions I found allows users to record, report and connect an event, then share information with other users and get updates from local ACLU affiliates.

After conducting a competitive analysis, I discovered several products in the space that were documenting unjust situations and illegal actions, but none of the companies had developed a solution that was able to address a variety of different emergency situations with their features. By creating a solution aimed at addressing a variety of emergency situations, users will be empowered to feel more secure in their daily interactions with the outside world.

Interaction Design

User flow creation

I envisioned how users could easily and consistently accomplish their goals of capturing emergency events and alerting their network that they're in danger. Exploring the potential user journeys for the app allowed me to keep the decision process simple. It minimized the possibility of confusion when navigating through tasks in an urgent situation.

Mobile Wireframes

Framework for a great user experience

Using the Material Design guidelines I created an application framework that combined native Android features with new core features to create a unique experience that exceeded the client’s expectations. I visualized some of the key screens users would be interacting with to access menu options, capture events, send alerts and notify the police. This helped me define the visual hierarchy while paying close attention to usability and accessibility.

Prototyping & Testing

Usability testing

Using Adobe XD I created a High-fidelity prototype simulating the core features offered in the mobile app and the onboarding process for new and existing users. This was crucial for user testing, in which several users could test and evaluate the look, feel and functionality of the app.

The Solution

A mobile security application

The Social Eyewitness App places all the core phone security tools in one accessible place. The user can simultaneously capture and share emergency events with personal contacts, police and county social channels, send emergency alert text messages to contacts with their geo-location, call 911 and enable their flashlight.
